MRSA is by definition a strain of Staphylococcus aureus that is resistant to a large group of antibiotics called the beta- lactams, which include the penicillins and the cephalosporins. MRSA is a type of staph that is not killed by penicillin and similar antibiotics. About 1 out of every 100 people carries MRSA without making them sick. Patients presenting with CA-MRSA have become more prevalent, yet few studies have been done to determine its origin, how it spreads, and the most effective treatment and prevention strategies. More data on CA-MRSA need to be collected and evaluated in order to fully understand how to control and prevent it from spreading in the community. MRSA, a form of staph infection , is a quickly emerging threat first detected primarily in hospitals, nursing homes, and other healthcare settings. More recently, however, the life-threatening infection has been found in athletic locker rooms, jails, military barracks, contaminated bodies of water, and other locations where many people are living together or congregating in close quarters.
