Mutombo, one of eight new Hawks, guided the Hawks to a 56-26 record and a place in the Eastern Conference semi-finals for the third time in four years under Coach Lenny Wilkens. Mutombo ended second in the league in blocked shots (3.3 bpg) and in rebounding (11.6 rpg) on his way to winning the NBA Defensive Player of the Year reward for the second time in his career.

The new millennium has left the Atlanta Hawks and their supporters disappointed to say the least. Late in the 2004 season they found reason to believe in the future but a rush of trades has appeared to free up cap room to draw some big name free agents or draft picks in the off-season.
